Hepatitis Awareness: Prevention, Detection, and Care

Sunday, 2 August 2026 · 6:00 PM (PKT)
Poster for Expert Series session ES-2026-04, Hepatitis Awareness: Prevention, Detection, and Care

Session summary

This session covered hepatitis awareness from a clinical, practical angle: how the infection spreads, how dental and general healthcare settings factor into prevention, the key warning signs to watch for, and the practical steps for early detection and care. Dr. Najam brought a general oral physician's perspective to the topic, drawing on the occupational exposure and infection control practices that are central to dental and clinical care.

Dr. Najam walked through the different types of viral hepatitis and their modes of transmission, including bloodborne and percutaneous exposure routes that are particularly relevant in dental and clinical settings, and outlined the standard infection control practices, such as sterilization protocols and personal protective equipment, that reduce risk for both healthcare workers and patients. The session also covered the early warning signs of hepatitis that are often overlooked, when to seek testing, and the basic steps in diagnosis and referral for care.

The session closed with a discussion of prevention at the individual and clinic level, including vaccination, safe injection and sterilization practices, and the role healthcare providers play in identifying and referring suspected cases early. It was open to students, healthcare professionals, and anyone looking to better understand hepatitis prevention and how to recognize it early.
